Northern Virginia Home Energy & HVAC Rebates Explained

For homeowners looking to upgrade one or more elements of their HVAC system, there’s never been a better time to make the switch. Thanks to incentives introduced in the Inflation Reduction Act, homeowners nationwide can receive rebates and tax credits for upgrading to high-efficiency HVAC units — but many Northern Virginia residents don’t know that the state offers its own incentives to encourage purchases. Here’s what you need to know about local incentives and how they can reduce the cost of HVAC upgrades.

How To Save Money

The website Energy-Grants lists every Virginia energy grant, rebate, loan, and incentive program available to home and business owners in the state. Incentives include utility rebates, property tax exemptions, and energy leasing programs. However, the most important incentives for homeowners are sales tax exemptions and rebates for energy-efficient products.

Heat Pump Loan Program

Those interested in installing a heat pump in their Northern Virginia home can take advantage of this loan program. Homeowners can secure up to $12,500 for heat pump installation, paid over 10 years at an interest rate of 8%.

WarmWise Rebate Program

If your furnace or boiler could use replacement, meeting certain specifications will allow you to apply for a WarmWise Energy Efficiency rebate. The necessary qualifications include:

  • The unit must have been purchased and installed after January 1, 2023.
  • The residence must have primary natural gas heating, and the installation must be retrofitted to an existing home.

As for the units themselves, the furnace or boiler must have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency of 90% or higher. AFUE measures how efficient a unit is at converting fuel to heat, so the higher, the better. Furnaces and boilers with an AFUE percentage of 90 or higher can save you up to 16% on utility bills annually, making high efficiency an excellent investment.

It’s important to note that these rebates are limited by funding set by the Virginia State Corporation Commission and, as such, are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you qualify for the rebate and successfully submit your application, you are eligible to receive a rebate of up to $400, paid out in two to three weeks.
